How to Install Deck Posts

Properly installing deck posts ensures a safe, long-lasting deck. Learn the best methods for setting posts on concrete footers to prevent rot and shifting.

Installing deck posts properly is essential for building a safe, sturdy deck that lasts for years. There are several ways to set deck posts, but we recommend attaching them to concrete footers raised above ground level. This prevents the wooden posts from coming into direct contact with soil, reducing the risk of rotting over time.

1. Setting Concrete Footers

To prevent the posts from shifting during freezing and thawing, place footers at least 6 inches below the frost line in your area. This depth provides stability and keeps the footers firmly in place throughout changing seasons.

  • Prepare the Holes
Start by pouring about 6 inches of all-purpose gravel into each posthole. Pack the gravel tightly with the end of a wooden post to create a stable base. This gravel layer helps with drainage and minimizes direct moisture contact with the concrete.
  • Add a Concrete Form
Place a cylindrical concrete form (like a cardboard tube) into each hole. Mark the form a few inches above ground level using a pen or pencil, then remove it and cut it down to this height with a handsaw. Set the trimmed form back in the hole with the cut end down. Check that it’s straight and level before moving to the next step.
  • Pour the Concrete
Mix your concrete solution and fill each form halfway. Remove any air pockets by poking a 2x4 into the mixture, then pour in the rest of the concrete until the form is full. Insert an anchor bolt into the center of each concrete form, leaving about an inch of thread above the surface. To keep the form secure while the concrete cures, backfill the area around it with gravel.

2. Installing Deck Post Brackets

Once the concrete is completely dry, it’s time to attach the deck post brackets. Use washers and nuts to secure the brackets to the anchor bolts. Then, place pressure plates on top of the brackets to evenly distribute the weight of the posts.

3. Attaching the Deck Posts

Place pressure-treated posts on the brackets, checking that each post is level and secure. Use structural screws to attach the posts firmly to the brackets.

TIP: Always check the end tag on the posts to confirm they’re rated for ground contact use, as deck posts need this durability.

Additional Tips for Deck Installation

Installing deck posts is just one of the critical steps in building a safe, long-lasting deck. Using the right materials and following accurate instructions make a huge difference in the final result. Always choose pressure-treated lumber specifically rated for outdoor use to maximize durability and lifespan. Familiarize yourself with the various Use Categories for treated lumber to ensure you select the best type for your deck’s specific needs.
