How to Pressure Wash Your Wood Deck

Revitalize your wood deck with a pressure washer! Learn techniques, tools, and tips for using a pressure washer to clean dirt and more off your deck.

Treated lumber decks are built to withstand the elements, but they still require regular care and maintenance. Over time, dirt, mildew, and grime can accumulate on your wood deck, making it look weathered. Fortunately, you can easily refresh your deck with a pressure washer. Follow this guide, and you’ll have a clean, revitalized deck in no time!

What you’ll need

In order to get started pressure washing your deck you will need some tools and materials such as:

  • Pressure washer
  • Broom or leaf blower
  • Deck cleaner (depending on how dirty your deck is)
  • Stiff-bristle brush (optional for tough spots)
  • Safety gear (sturdy shoes/boots, gloves, safety glasses)

Prepare your deck for pressure washing

Before you begin, remove all furniture, grills, planters, and other objects from your deck. Next, clear away any loose dirt, leaves, or debris using a broom or a leaf blower.

When to use soap or a deck cleaner?

If your deck has heavy dirt, mildew, or stains, applying a deck cleaner before pressure washing can help lift grime more effectively.

  1. Fill your pressure washer’s detergent tank with deck cleaner (if applicable).
  2. Use a soap nozzle to spray the cleaning solution evenly over the deck.
  3. For stubborn spots, scrub with a stiff-bristle brush.
  4. Let the cleaner sit for 10 minutes before pressure washing.

How to use a pressure washer

Now that your deck is prepped, it’s time to set up your pressure washer. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to connect your garden hose, pressure washer, and wand. Give our pressure washing video a watch to help you get started:

Tips for Effective Pressure Washing:

  • Use the right nozzle – A fan-tip nozzle is best for wood.
  • Start at a distance – Hold the wand about 2 feet from the deck and move closer if needed.
  • Move with the grain – Use long, even strokes to avoid damage.
  • Don’t stay in one spot – Keeping the pressure washer in one place for too long can gouge the wood.
  • Test first – Try pressure washing a small, inconspicuous area before tackling the entire deck.

Pressure wash your deck

Here comes the fun part, pressure washing your deck! Start spraying in sections to maintain consistency and control. Work in smooth, overlapping strokes, following the grain of the wood. Be sure to wash railings and stairs as well. As you wash your deck, you should begin to see the wood return to its natural, brighter color!

Let your deck dry and inspect

Once pressure washing is complete, allow your deck to dry and then inspect it to see if you are satisfied.

  • If you notice raised fibers or rough patches, lightly sand them for a smooth finish.
  • If any stains remain, consider spot-cleaning the affected areas.
  • Depending on your deck’s age and condition, you may also want to stain or seal the wood to protect it from future wear. Make sure the deck is fully dry before applying stain or sealer, this can take up to 48 hours based on sunlight and humidity.

Enjoy your refreshed deck

Regular deck maintenance is key to keeping your outdoor space looking great for years to come. Now that your deck has been pressure washed, move your furniture back and enjoy your refreshed space!
