How to Install Deck POSTS?
Strong foundation, stronger reputation. Build a deck that will last for years to come by properly installing deck posts. First off, mark where deck posts will stand in the yard.
There are several ways to set deck posts; we recommend attaching the posts to concrete footers above the ground. This helps to prevent wooden posts from rotting.
- Set footers a minimum of 6 inches below the frost line for your area to prevent movement during freezing temperatures.
- Pour about 6 inches of all-purpose gravel into postholes and pack the gravel tight by using the end of a wooden post. Place a cylindrical concrete form in the posthole. Using a pen or pencil, mark the form a few inches above the ground. After pulling the form out of the hole, use the marked spot to cut the form down with a handsaw. Set the cut side down in the hole. Check to see if it’s straight and level.
- Mix the concrete solution and fill the form half way. Remove air pockets by poking a 2 in. x 4 in. into the concrete mix. After removing the air pockets, fill the remaining half of the form. Insert an anchor bolt into the concrete with no more than an inch of thread showing. To ensure the concrete form stays in place while curing, backfill the surrounding area with gravel.
- Once the concrete has completely dried, secure the post brackets with washers and nuts, then set pressure plates on top. Place pressure-treated posts on the brackets, making sure they’re level and secure with structural screws. TIP: Be sure to check the end tag. Pressure-treated posts should always be ground contact use for deck lumber.
